When will the sun go down??
We are into the shortest nights of the year. It doesn't feel quite as bright as the years in even more northerly Aberdeen, but it is still very light out.
This morning though, the question was, "When will the sun come out??" It was the nursery fun day, in celebration of both summer and the 50th anniversary of the nursery, but it pissed it down all morning. Luckily though, it turned into a gorgeous afternoon for bouncy castles, face painting, merry-go-rounds and barbecues.
Now for an ecological, ethical question:
Aren't helium balloon launches a bad idea? The nursery launched 50 gold balloons into the air. And, sometime this week, in support of the little girl who's gone missing in Portugal, 50000 balloons will be launched all over Scotland and who knows where else. I don't want to be a big party pooper, or seem like I don't care about a missing child, and it is visually very impressive to watch all the balloons sail into the air, BUT. Won't they end up in rivers and strangling moorhens and twisted in trees? Why do I bother with recycling and refuse to litter if I then scatter balloon trash all around the place?

great post. yeah, i think balloon launches are an outrage, i was completely shocked to learn they still happen. i would've thought the last one happened in 89 or something. depressing.
yes, don't you feel guilty when thinking stuff like that? i definitely agree with you. on another note, that's some snazzy face-painting. i remember fighting to not let my mom wash face paint off me before bed, promising i wouldn't sleep on it. kids perceptions are so funny.
Patrick, are they still happening in Canada? I was only directing my rage at France, and then Europe, proclaiming the intelligence of Canadians because we'd stopped that decades ago. But if Canada is still doing it, then I'll have to shut up, I guess. Or get madder.
Sharon, here. 3 comments within hours of your post... compared to my 2 for a poem that took me hours to write! You win!
Balloons cute, but bad. There was a school here in Scotland (primary) that refused to do a balloon launch because of the ecological impact. Those kids are too cool for school.
Everyone is commenting on the balloons but doesn't anyone besides Jennifer think the girls look cute with their beautifully painted faces? The nursery school is a wonderful place and as seen in the pictures the children are so very important.
Chez nous on envoie des ballons biodégradables ... reste le problème des ficelles qui ne le sont pas !
Y'a aussi tous les gens qui roulent des kilomètres pour rien ... et de tous les produits qui sont produits pour rien !!!
